Who is a good candidate for Botox?

Men and women with frown lines between their eyebrows can reduce theses lines significantly with Botox injections. Other indications include "crow's feet" around the eyes, uneven eyebrows, wrinkles around the nose ("bunny nose"), strong vertical neck bands, and hyper-animated chins. Strong vertical lip wrinkles can be moderately reduced with conservative Botox injections. A gentle lift to the eyebrows can also be achieved with Botox injections. Horizontal lines on the forehead respond incredibly well to Botox injections.

What can Botox do for me?

Botox works by binding to the nerves that control the facial muscles, reducing their ability to tell the muscle to contract. Over time, these nerves are conditioned. Because they receive frequent messages to contract, they begin to anticipate the message and send a preemptive message on to the muscle, keeping it contracted and causing wrinkles that appear in areas of frequent muscle contraction, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow's feet and around the nose. When Botox is injected, a treated segment of muscle is "blocked" from moving. In response to the blockage, a nerve grows new sprouts that allow messages to reach the muscle, but these sprouts are not conditioned in the same way, allowing for muscle control without the previous habitual contraction.

Botox generally lasts about three months, when the old nerve ending regains function and the new ones retract. The desired result is softening of lines caused by facial muscles. A "frozen" or totally motionless appearance is not desirable and can be avoided.

Botox can dramatically reduce "worry" lines, crow's feet, and other irregularities produced by the action of facial muscles on overlying skin. A much smoother facial contour results, with no "down" time and very minimal discomfort.
