How a blepharoplasty is done
The main goal in upper eyelid surgery is to remove excess skin and create a smooth, natural lid contour. It is critical to avoid taking out too much fat, as this will actually make you look older. Removal of too much skin will make it difficult to close your eyes all the way, contributing to dry eye symptoms.
Results: what a blepharoplasty can do
Before blepharoplasty surgery, this patient had excess skin that hung down over her eyelashes, making her appear tired and sad.
After an upper lid blepharoplasty, this woman has a much more alert and well rested appearance. Her incision is well hidden in the crease of her upper eyelid.
What a blepharoplasty cannot correct:
- Drooping eyebrows. If extra skin is taken out of the upper eyelids when the brow is too low, it will actually pull the eyebrows down lower. A brow lift would be a better option in this situation.
- A hollow midface with extreme dark circles under the eyes: this condition may require facial implants for correction.
- Very fine wrinkles or crepey skin. This may require an erbium laser treatment, which can be done at the same time as the blepharoplasty.
