Rhinoplasty Questions

Serving Fort Collins, Northern Colorado & Cheyenne, and Southeastern Wyoming

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:

  • Your nose is overly large and doesn't match the rest of your face
  • Your nasal tip is broad or projects too much
  • You have a "hump" on the bridge of your nose
  • Your nose is long and the tip droops
  • You have an Asian nose without a defined bridge or tip.

In addition, you should be in good health and maintain realistic expectations for the procedure.

If my nose has been broken in the past, can a rhinoplasty improve the shape of my nose?

Yes. Usually after a nasal fracture the bones can be re-broken and set. However, if you have a cartilage or septal injury, a perfect restoration of nasal contour may not be possible.

What techniques are available for rhinoplasty?

Nose Surgeon Dr. Duncan usually uses an open rhinoplasty technique in order to get as good a result as possible. In a closed rhinoplasty, all the incisions are made inside the nose, with no visible scars. Because there is reduced visibility and maneuverability, this form of rhinoplasty is available in cases where only minor changes are desired. An open rhinoplasty allows more correction and attention to symmetry. Scarring will be minimal, but bruising and swelling may take a little longer to resolve than in a closed procedure.

How long does a rhinoplasty take?

A rhinoplasty can take from 1–2 hours depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Will I be awake for my rhinoplasty?

Unless the degree of correction is minor, Dr. Duncan recommends a light general anesthetic. It is difficult to numb the nasal area with local anesthetic.

Will my nose be broken?

Depending on the complexity of the reshaping of the nose, it may be necessary to perform a controlled break of the nasal bone, but this is only the case when the bone itself is responsible for the undesirable slope or shape of the nose. This controlled break will lead to a cosmetic improvement of the nose's shape. If the tip is the only concern, or if a nasal implant is placed, usually no fracture is needed.

How long will recovery take?

In general, swelling and bruising should go down quickly, and your nose will be presentable within a week or two of the surgery. You should limit strenuous activities for a few weeks and sleep with your head elevated for a week.

When will the final results of my rhinoplasty be clear?

Your nose will continue to heal for several months after the procedure, and the final results may not be evident until more than a year months after the surgery.

How long will the results of my rhinoplasty last?

The nose is not as subject to the aging process as some other parts of your face, so the results of your rhinoplasty should be permanent.
