Follicular stem cell transfer is effective in many cases. In this procedure, several small hair-bearing samples are taken from the back of the head, where hair generally remains thickest for a lifetime. Hair follicle precursors (stem cells) exist at the base of the follicle. The tissue is processed so these cells can be injected into the thinning area with a needle. It takes about a month to see some improvement in hair growth, and at 3 months, a visible difference can be seen. Young patients do respond better than older patients. We recommend adding finasteride or dutasteride daily, along with hair vitamins, light therapy such as Hair Max comb, and topical Rogaine or minoxidil.
35-year-old female with pressure alopecia. Patient again at 1 and 2 months post-follicular cell transplant.
